Urban Fantasy Recommendations

I love Urban Fantasy, I read a fair amount of it and I recommend it to all and sundry. This is a list of series that I have read at least book one of and am happy to recommend other people read.

I’ve split them into tiers, starting with my absolute favourites working down into those that I enjoyed but feel other people would enjoy more. I’ve also added in which broad type of Urban Fantasy they fall into.

The (very) broad types of Urban Fantasy (that I’ve seen so far):

  • Private investigator type. They’re fully aware of the supernatural world, are usually very skilled, but in hiding from the council or equivalent.
  • Member of the supernatural police force or special force. They’re either part of a hidden government agency, or a lone hunter type ala Supernatural. Again fully aware of the supernatural world, usually not quite as skilled.
  • A supernatural creature or being that’s in hiding due to the type of species or magic type.
  • The human in the supernatural world. Usually a kick-ass protagonist that was either raised or is pulled into the supernatural world.
  • Post-apocalyptic – supernatural world out in the open.

This list will be updated as I find and enjoy more series. I’m open to recommendations to read, but will not be adding any books that I haven’t personally read and thoroughly enjoyed.

All links go to the Goodreads page of book 1 in the series.

Books with a heart next to them have a strong romantic subplot. Books with 18+ next to them have explicit sex scenes.

Tier One – Books I passionately adore.

InCryptid by Seanan McGuire.  – Loosely in the supernatural police-force category.

Toby Daye by Seanan McGuire. – Loosely in the private investigator category.

The Final Formula by Becca Andre – Magical being in hiding.

Owl & The Japanese Circus by Kristi Charish – Lara Croft type human in a supernatural world.

Infernal Hunt – Human in the supernatural world (Yes I’m including my own series so shoot me :P).

Tier Two – Books I really enjoyed.

Shades Of Magic by V.E. Scwab. – Loosely in the human in a supernatural world.

Dragon Born by Ella Summers – Magical being in hiding. 💜

Hellequin by Steve McHugh – Magical being in hiding.

The SPI Files by Lisa Shearin – Magical police force/spec ops.

Descent by SM Reine – Supernatural police force type.

Parasol Protectorate by Gail Carriger – Victorian era police force type. Some would argue this is paranormal romance. 💜💜

Alex Verus by Benedict Jacka – Loosely the private investigator type.

Stormwalker by Allyson James – Magical being in hiding. 18+

20 Sided Sorceress by Annie Bellet – Magical being in hiding.

Preternatural Affairs by S.M. Reine – Police force type.

Pax Arcana by Elliott James – Magical being in hiding.

Paper Magician by Charlie N Holmberg – Steampunk Victorian world with lots of romance. Far from traditional UF. 💜

Curse Workers by Holly Black – Magical being in hiding. YA.

Mercy Thompson by Patricia Briggs – Something close to October Daye. Supernatural protagonist, not super-powered, not hidden.

Tier Three – Books that I saw a lot of potential in but feel other people will enjoy more than I did.

The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher – Private investigator type.

Iron Druid by Kevin Hearne. – Magical being in hiding.

Devil’s Isle by Chloe Neill – Post Apocalyptic.

Witches Of Dark Root by April Aasheim – Magical being in hiding. 💜

Scarlett Bernard by Melissa F Olson – Private investigator type.

Witching Savanah by J.D. Horn – Magical being in hiding. 💜

Connor Grey by Mark Del Franco – Police force type.

Emanations by Becca Mills – Human pulled in supernatural world.

Enjoy! I’ll update this page when I find new Urban Fantasy series to recommend! 😀
